Short story

In the mythological geography of Barolo, there are cru that have made history, and then there is Bricco delle Viole. This is a magical place, an elevation that looks out over the mountains and feels the breath of the Alps.

It is no coincidence that the Viberti family chose to make wine separately from one of the most special parcels of this vineyard.

"If you close your eyes and taste a Bricco delle Viole, you recognize it immediately. It has a scent that is uniquely its own. It is a Barolo that does not want to be powerful, but elegant." - Claudio Viberti

You can immediately recognize the notes of mint, eucalyptus and camphor, which are the unmistakable signature of Bricco delle Viole. The history of this wine began in 1967, when the parcel that today gives rise to Viberti Giovanni's Riserva was planted.

Bricco delle Viole is one of the highest vineyards in the entire Barolo appellation, with altitudes reaching 450 meters above sea level. This makes it a special place for the ripening of Nebbiolo:

  • High Altitude: Temperature ranges between day and night amplify aromas and preserve the wine's natural acidity.
  • Southwest exposure: Grapes receive sun until late afternoon, ensuring full and gradual ripening.
  • Soil of Tortonian Origin: Marly, with a loamy-clay composition and very little sand. This type of soil retains moisture better and allows the vines to cope with even the hottest years with balance.

The wine comes from a single 0.5-hectare parcel located to the left of the road that divides the cru. Unlike other producers, this parcel is used exclusively for the Riserva and is not blended with other parcels of Bricco delle Viole. It is a unique parcel, intended only for the Reserve, to preserve its identity and unmistakable character.

CLIMATIC TREND

The year opened with a prolonged winter and a rainy and cool early spring, which delayed the start of the growing cycle by about two weeks compared to recent years, but brought it back to more traditional timetables. The abundant spring rains ensured good water accumulation in the soil, which was useful during the summer, which alternated between heat waves and milder, unstable phases. This required great care in the vineyard, especially for phytosanitary management. In September, a severe thunderstorm with hail affected limited areas around Alba, but did not affect the main vineyard zones. Nebbiolo, harvested in October, shows important aging potential, with intense and structured wines. A vintage that can be described as traditional, balanced and promising.

Organoleptic Characteristics

→ Color: bright garnet red
Aromas: Ripe red fruits, raspberry, spicy notes. Sweet tannin balanced with acidity.
Serving temperature: 18° C
Ability to evolve: 15+ years

Vinification

The long production process of this wine begins in the vineyard through thinning and selection at the grape harvest stage. Harvesting is done manually, and once picked, the grapes are placed inside 20Kg crates. After destemming-crushing, simultaneous maceration and alcoholic fermentation occurs for 10-14 days inside submerged cap rotovinifiers. At the end of this operation, malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously in steel.

Refinement

Aging takes place for 60 months in truncated oak vats with an average capacity of 25 to 50 hL. At the end of the same aging, bottling occurs, which does not involve any kind of filtration. Following bottling, the wine rests another 6-12 months before being released to the market.

CLIMATIC TREND

The 2018 vintage began with a cold and wet winter, as in the entire Barolo area. Low winter temperatures favored a slow sprouting, which, in fact, occurred toward the end of March. In addition, minimum temperatures just above freezing during the first decade of April limited the risk of frost damage. This vintage has, fortunately, reestablished the water balances in the soil, which were heavily weakened by the dry and droughty 2017 vintage. These water resources accumulated during the winter and spring together with good weather and medium to high temperatures during the summer allowed for abundant production while maintaining, at the same time, high concentrations within the berry. In general, the wines obtained from this vintage are immediately ready with gentle tannins that are never rough or underripe. In addition, these wines have high acidity given by the high rainfall that occurred. In conclusion, we can say that the 2018 vintage can be added to the ranks of excellent vintages.

CLIMATIC TREND

One of the hottest and driest years of the decade, marked by extreme weather patterns but successfully managed thanks to the readiness of winemakers.
The winter was dry with little snowfall; spring, however, saw above-average temperatures and a good vegetative start.
In late April, a frost wave hit many Italian regions hard. In the Langhe, however, damage was contained and limited to the valley floors or colder areas.

From May to late summer the weather was dominated by high pressures, with hot, sunny and very dry days. In spite of this, unlike other torrid vintages (such as 2003), the nights remained cool, favoring the preservation of the aromatic and acid balance of the grapes.

In late August, a rare rainy episode (about 25 mm) brought temporary relief to the vines. September then began with a significant drop in temperatures and significant day-night temperature ranges, ideal conditions for polyphenol and anthocyanin synthesis.
The harvest was the earliest in decades: in some Nebbiolo vineyards harvesting began as early as the second week of September.
A vintage that rewarded those who knew how to manage the vineyard with precision: the wines are concentrated, intense, but also surprisingly balanced, with good evolutionary potential. In 2017 Bricco delle Viole was the only Barolo Riserva we produced.
