Short story

A White with an Ancient History, with a Tradition Name.

Every wine has a story, and every name has a meaning. Filebasse, Viberti's Chardonnay, is no exception. Its name comes from an ancient Piedmontese custom:

"In the Langhe, the lower parts of the hills were always reserved for white grape varieties because they were better resistant to moisture."

From this tradition comes Filebasse, a wine that recounts the past but looks to the future with Claudio VIBERTI's personal style.

In the 1980s, Chardonnay in the Langhe was often vinified in an international style, with a pronounced use of wood and an opulent imprint. But in 2004, Claudio Viberti decided that that style did not belong to him. For him, Chardonnay had to be different: fresher, more mineral, more authentic. Thus was born Filebasse, a white that focuses on the purity of the fruit and the identity of the terroir.

Filebasse was born in the same areas where the Viberti family grows La Gemella Barbera, in the hills of Costa di Vergne , just a stone's throw from Barolo.

CLIMATIC TREND

The 2025 harvest in Barolo is characterized by a highly balanced technical profile, built on a winter with adequate water reserves, a regular spring with slightly early vegetative growth, and a hot summer that was well compensated by timely rainfall and conservative management of the leaf canopy, which prevented water stress and maturation blocks. The Nebbiolo cycle was consistent, with gradual, unforced sugar accumulation, high total acidity, complete seed maturity, and thick skins rich in anthocyanins and tannins, allowing for early harvesting without compromising aromatic complexity.

The overall picture for 2025 is in line with the trend of early ripening seen in the last 10 harvests, thanks to an increase in the heat summation for the months of June and July.

In terms of winemaking, Nebbiolo is producing wines with elegant, soft tannins, which are more immediate and pleasant to drink even in the early years of bottling. The result is wines that are ready to drink sooner.

Organoleptic Characteristics

→ Color: straw yellow with greenish highlights
Scents: Acacia Flower, Banana and Green Apple
Serving temperature: 10°C
Ability to evolve: 1/2 years

Vinification

The grapes come from the lowest part of the vineyard, where the just-ripened bunches are selected by hand. Harvesting takes place in 20-kg crates to preserve the integrity of the berries. After soft pressing with a pneumatic press, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks: initially between 10 and 12 °C for 12-14 days, with completion at 15 °C.

Malolactic fermentation is stopped by the exclusive use of cold, thanks to thermoconditioned steel tanks, so as to preserve freshness and acidity.

Refinement

Ageing takes place exclusively in steel tanks for about 5/6 months

CLIMATIC TREND

The 2024 vintage was marked by warm-humid weather that broke the drought trend of recent years. Persistent rains remedied the accumulated water shortage, but also put a strain on agronomic management. The season required great care in the vineyard, with variable results depending on the location and exposure of the vineyards. Good temperature swings in the higher cru encouraged balanced ripening and a fine aromatic profile. The harvested bunches, healthy and with low alcohol contents, promise fresh, elegant wines with good evolutionary potential.

CLIMATIC TREND

The 2023 vintage was characterized by warm weather and little rain throughout the winter and late spring. Starting in the second decade of May, heavy rains began, ending in mid-June. The modest amount of water, especially in the southwestern part of the Barolo area, gave the vegetation a new boost. From July and August temperatures rose and along with an absence of rainfall the grapes suffered not a little from water stress. Production was average with a positive concentration in both aromas and colors.

The harvest for our Filebasse 2023 began on September 4.
